Lonza Announces 29th Annual Inventerprise Science Competition

  • 29th Annual Inventerprise Science Contest challenges Central Oregon students to address the problems associated with “messes”. This year’s competition problem statement is as follows: “What a mess! Messes can be small like sticky fingers or huge such as plastic pollution in the ocean. Are you tired of seeing all these messes, tired of cleaning them up, or just wish they never happened in the first place? Invent something to handle the problem.”
  • The contest is open to all Central Oregon students in Grades K-12, including homeschooled students.
  •  This year’s contest will be held virtually with entries accepted online at or-inventerprise.zfairs.com until January 26, 2021.

Quote from Dory Koehler-King, Inventerprise Contest Director, Lonza: “This year’s Inventerprise competition provides a fun and relevant challenge of addressing messes, small or big. I am excited to see the creative inventions from our Central Oregon students!”

Bend, OR (USA), 07 December 2020 – Today Lonza announced the 29th Annual Inventerprise Science Contest Challenge. Central Oregon students have an opportunity to address ever applicable problem of messes in the 29th annual Inventerprise contest. This contest is sponsored by Bend Research, now a part of Lonza Pharma & Biotech, with support from Bend-La Pine Schools, and Central Oregon Community College.

This year’s competition problem statement is as follows:

“What a mess! Messes can be small like sticky fingers or huge such as plastic pollution in the ocean. Are you tired of seeing all these messes, tired of cleaning them up, or just wish they never happened in the first place? Invent something to handle the problem. “

The Inventerprise contest is open to all Central Oregon students in Grades K-12, including home-schooled students. Any Central Oregon student in Grades K-12 may enter. Students may enter as individuals or in groups of up to three students but each student can only submit one entry.

While all entries will be submitted electronically this year, we encourage the use of creative formats which can be photographed or video recorded for submission. Examples are drawings, dioramas, models, movies, posters and reports. Use whatever medium best conveys your ideas. Video entries should be no more than 3 minutes in length. Projects will be accepted until January 26, 2021. Visit or-inventerprise.zfairs.com to submit your entry. Entries will be judged on originality, usefulness and development of concept. Last year nearly 1200 students entered individually and in groups, and close to 121 students won awards.

Winners will be announced on or before February 5, 2021.

Prizes will be awarded at all grade levels, and the exact number of recipients will be determined by the judges. Students submitting the top high-school entries will receive a portion of the $2,000 cash prize. The student or students submitting the top middle-school entries will choose from among a GoPro® camera, Apple Watch, mountain bike, 3-D printer, or inflatable paddleboard. Student winners in grades K-8 will receive specially designed T-shirts and a certificate recognizing their accomplishment.

Teachers in Grades K-5 whose classes have greater than 50 percent participation will be eligible for the Tina McGeary Teacher Incentive Program. This program will distribute at least $2,000 in gift certificates among area teachers for classroom supplies or books. The program is named in memory of Tina McGeary, an Inventerprise contest founder and unflagging advocate of the work that teachers do for the community.

About Inventerprise

The Inventerprise Contest began in 1992 as an outgrowth of a business-education partnership between Bend Research (now a part of Lonza) and the Bend-La Pine School District to promote science education and enrich students’ educational experience. Fourteen years ago, Central Oregon Community College joined the effort by helping to plan and run the contest. New this year, all contest entries are to be submitted electronically to the Inventerprise website.
