Leadership Bend takes the frontline

By: Jeff Hinman, Leadership Bend Class of 2016

In March, Leadership Bend went to Washington and Salem, or more correctly, representatives from those federal, state and local seats of power came to Bend to discuss public service, the judicial system and the criminal justice system with our class.

The morning session brought together Leadership Redmond and Leadership Bend to mingle over coffee and donuts. The combined Leadership classes then engaged in a lively presentation from Deschutes County Commissioners Alan Unger and Tony DeBone.

After bidding farewell to our Redmond counterparts, Leadership Bend met with field representatives from the offices of U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and U.S. Congressman Greg Walden.  The field representatives spoke about the importance of constituent service in Central Oregon and asked Leadership Bend participants to act as the frontline in escalating important community issues to be addressed by Oregon’s federal delegation.

During the City Club lunch, Governor Kate Brown gave a presentation of her 2016 agenda and priorities for Oregon.  The Governor applauded Central Oregon’s “ingenuity, intrepidness and innovation,” and entertained several questions from the record attendance audience.

We then heard from the honorable Alta J. Brady, presiding judge of the Deschutes County Circuit Court, as well as Jeff Hall, the court’s trial court administrator. Our final panel featured Jim Porter, the Bend Chief of Police, Captain Deron McMasters from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney John Hummel and Deputy Public Defender Andrew Doyle.

We wrapped up the day discussing different email styles with leadership guru Jillian Taylor. Turns out our styles of email communication are just as diverse as the members of our class. The key, Jillian said, it adapting your style to the style of the person you are communicating with.
