City & County: Setting Goals

By: Jennifer Stephens  //  BEND CHAMBER GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS CONTRACTOR

Personal New Year resolutions may be fading away, but the Deschutes County Commission and Bend City Council are in the depths of planning sessions.

The Deschutes County Commissioners met on January 29, 2019 where they discussed goal setting, Commissioner priorities, updates on committee work, and specific projects/issues including Harper Bridge, stabilization center, marijuana land use, 9-1-1 issues and future planning. Wildfire resiliency, housing, transportation, and veterans support were additional topics discussed.

Then after goal setting comes budget season!

The City of Bend met on February 4 and 5 where Councilors participated in team building and communication exercises, received presentations from departments in the Core Service Areas, they defined individual priorities, and discussed Council goals in the areas of housing, transportation/mobility, safety, economic vitality, effective and efficient city operations.

Next steps are for staff to review, specific goal language to be drafted, then goals will be sent back for final discussion and approval before implementation. Then after goal setting comes budget season!

The Bend Chamber Advocacy Council monitors City, County, State, as well as other local districts and agencies, for issues and opportunities facing our membership. The mission of the Advocacy Council is twofold:

  1. Identify, evaluate and recommend positions to the Bend Chamber Board of Directors on issues and opportunities which may impact the health of the business community and the economic stability of Bend.
  2. Promote community awareness and engagement on issues impacting our community through our “What’s Brewing” series of community forums and other resources available through the organization.
