Many students face a challenging dilemma when they graduate. They’ve finally earned that degree that verifies the knowledge they’ve gained, but many businesses not only need this demonstrated knowledge, they also want practical experience that relates to the position. For most students gaining this experience can be a challenge. Many students graduate and think they’re now ready to enter their career field. However many entry level jobs require related work experience that is often difficult to obtain. This is the dilemma student’s face and many often wonder, “How do I get hired when all of the entry level positions I’m applying for not only require a degree, but related work experience as well?” Students often feel like you can’t get the experience without first having the degree. It’s a false belief that all too many students fall victim to.
One solution to gaining work experience is to complete an internship.
One solution to gaining work experience is to complete an internship. What is an internship? An internship is a work opportunity for both students and new graduates which allows them to gain practical experience in the professional world for a limited period of time. Businesses are more willing to take a chance on a student that has limited to no experience through an internship than they are to hire them on as regular employee.
The Youth Career Connect (YCC) program is here to help students find meaningful internships and to help businesses find talented interns. For more information on the program and how to participate please visit www.youthcareerconnect.org
Internships can benefit students in a number of ways. For one, they provide relevant experience not only needed to qualify for jobs but also help someone stand out amongst other candidates when applying. Participating in an internship provides a gateway for an intern to gain experience and build skills related to their career goal. It also allows them to learn more about career options within their targeted industry. The saying, “It’s not who you know but who knows you” still rings true today. Having successfully completed an internship allows you a chance to make a lasting impression on a business that you may be applying with in the future. This experience gives you a leg up on the competition because not only are you now known, but you also have been exposed to the companies work environment and the business has a better gauge of your work ethic, abilities and how you perform in their setting.
