Students Speak to City Council in Support of Bend’s Climate Action Resolution Plan

Cascades Academy Middle School

Cascades Academy middle school students Brady McHugh (6th grade), and Liz McHugh (8th grade), presented to the Bend City Council on Wednesday, June 7th in support of Bend’s Climate Action Resolution plan.

As part of their Environmental Activism elective at Cascades Academy, students learned about Bend’s Climate Action Resolution plan that passed in September and why it is important for the city of Bend.

“I am concerned about how Bend will be affected by climate change. There will be no more winter sports, skiing, snowboarding or sledding. I enjoy fly fishing and am worried that the fishing industry will also collapse and become extinct. There will be no more recreational fishing. Salmon and trout need cold waters and will die off quickly as temperatures rise. We spoke with local fly fishing businesses and they have all pledged to support Bend’s Climate Action Resolution, including: Confluence Fly Shop, The Hook Fly Shop, Fly and Field Outfitters, and The Patient Angler. If we come together, we can make a large difference in our community and even the world,” remarked Liz.

Her brother Brady added, “The Bend Climate Resolution is a plan that needs to be put into place to slow the effects of climate change. The people of Bend want to use renewable energy to reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere. While the effects of climate change are appearing, their full effects will not be apparent for a while. We don’t have to do this for ourselves; we will be long gone by the time climate change is in full swing. We need to do it for the generations that will come after us, and the ones that come after our kids.”

According to the resolution, “The City Council thinks that meaningful action is needed at all levels of government to mitigate and adapt to climate change, protect the public trust, ensure a resilient community, and leave a healthy environment and atmosphere for future generations. The City of Bend is ready to do its part, and will engage residents, visitors, businesses and organizations, as well as other levels of government, to do the same.” The full text of the resolution can be found here.
