The Honorable Kate Brown, Governor, State of Oregon
Speaker of the House, Representative Tina Kotek
RE: HB 2893 – In support of the City of Bend to evaluate inclusion of certain land with poor agricultural soils to be evaluated for inclusion in the urban growth boundary.
Governor Brown and Speaker Kotek,
The Bend Chamber of Commerce represents nearly 1300 members with 27,000 plus employees of a diverse business base. The chamber Board of Directors extends their support for HB 2893, which will allow the City of Bend to potentially extend its Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) into certain lands that are currently zoned agricultural, yet have extremely poor soil content for this manner of use.
Understanding the necessity and history of protecting agricultural lands, our membership believes that the soil content of some of the lands located adjacent to our UGB are not fit for agricultural use. HB 2893 would allow our region to evaluate certain lands with poor soil classifications for potential inclusions into the UGB.
We understand that much of the lands under evaluation are adjacent to built environments with infrastructure that would allow for more affordable expansion into new property, allowing for more opportunity for affordable housing and a master-planned area that would support this type of development.
Thank you for your consideration and for your service.
Bend Chamber of Commerce
