Subaru of Bend donates $40,000 to First Story

Subaru of Bend presented First Story with a check for $40,000 to help build an accessible home.

The money came from Subaru of America’s eighth annual “Share the Love” event; where customers who bought or leased a new Subaru vehicle between Nov. 19, 2015, to Jan. 2, 2016, selected from a list of four national charities and one local charity to receive a $250 donation.

This was the first year First Story was part of the “Share the Love” event. Executive director of First Story, Claire Duncan, says the $40,000 check will go toward building an accessible home for the Andrews family in First Story’s new Bend community, First Place.

The Andrews family – mom, dad and son Abel – have been living in a cramped house in Bend. Abel, a six‐year‐old with lots of energy, has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. Although the family works hard, they could not afford to build an accessible home. To qualify for the First Story home the Andrews went through a comprehensive interview and assessment process and were required to meet certain income guidelines. The Andrews family will purchase the home through a zero down payment and a zero interest 30-year home loan from First Story. The home is being built by Hayden Homes.

“We are so grateful to Subaru of Bend and our community for helping us raise money to build a home that will be accessible for Abel,” said Abel’s mom Kristine Andrews.

In addition to First Story, the money also went to the following charities: the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Meals On Wheels America and the National Park Foundation. Over the past 20 years, Subaru of America has donated over 50 million dollars to causes. “We believe in giving back to our neighbors. We believe in First Story’s mission of building strong communities by creating home ownership opportunities for those in need,” said Matt Thomas, owner of Subaru of Bend.
