Oregon Manufacturers’ Roundtable

By: Associated Oregon Industries

The United States is experiencing renewed growth in manufacturing and Oregon needs to ensure that it continues to capture its share of that growth and the economic advantages it brings.

Manufacturing is uniquely influenced by state policies because they happen at many levels of the business – labor, employment, taxes, land use, energy, environment and transportation to name a few. As such, the success of an Oregon manufacturer is influenced by policies in all those areas.

“Manufacturers make up nearly 30 percent of Oregon’s economy and are critical to communities throughout Oregon. Yet they are dealing with the layering of issues from workforce challenges to a crumbling transportation system to unpredictable environmental regulations,” said Mike Freese, vice president for Associated Oregon Industries (AOI). The Manufacturers Roundtable will be a great opportunity to share and learn about these issues and business implications.

AOI is presenting the Oregon Manufacturers’ Roundtable to bring manufacturers together to identify and discuss their most pressing challenges. Dan Thorndike, corporate counsel & secretary-treasurer of Medford Fabrication, believes that the many regulatory and legislative issues facing Oregon businesses require a significant and unified presence by the Oregon manufacturing community. What would he like to see come out of the Roundtable, “…a real sense of the nuts and bolts issues and challenges facing Oregon’s manufacturers,” said Thorndike. “In the most general sense, it would be great – though unlikely – for Oregon’s regulatory agencies to implement compliance and enforcement strategies that actually worked with well-meaning Oregon businesses, rather than starting off with threats, fines and press releases.”
