Nonprofit organization Building a Better Bend, which seeks to positively impact the development and growth of Bend, announced it will be hosting Katherine Schultz on Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. for “Bend Grows UP, Part 1: Understanding vertical development and its impact on our city.”
Schultz is a Director at GBD Architects in Portland and has more than 20 years of experience in mixed-use housing and planning. She also serves as the Chair of Portland’s Planning Commission.
Recent Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) policy decisions have been made to limit the size of expansion, which necessitates that Bend becomes denser within existing boundaries. One way to do this will be to revitalize areas and build taller mixed-use buildings. The City of Bend has identified key areas including the “Central District” in which vertical development is a priority due to its location, access to services and current underutilized status.
Schultz has recently been hired by local real estate developer Brooks Resources and nonprofit organization, Central Oregon LandWatch to review the city’s central district plan and code amendments and suggest enhancements to that plan in advance of city council adoption later this summer.
These two organizations embrace the change facing our city and want to ensure that the city has access to peer expertise and support so vertical development is successful.
During the free event, taking place at Trinity Episcopal Church, 469 NW Wall Street in Bend, Schultz will discuss the impacts verticality has on cities, why and when it makes sense and share success stories. She will also talk about potential unintended legislative pitfalls that go beyond the simple assumption of “zone it and they will build.”
A future part two lecture will focus on the technical aspects of vertical development and how to make it pencil. A date and speakers for part two will be announced later this spring.
