1859 Media announces new model

In response to continued growth and demand for specialty publishing services, 1859 Media announced a new model to operate its growing publishing enterprise. The publishing house will divide its business into two separate entities: Statehood Media and Oregon Media.

Statehood Media will own the award-winning 1859 Oregon’s Magazine, as well as Amtrak’s OnTrak publication. It will be led by Kevin Max, Tim Leedom and Colleen Peterson.

Oregon Media will own the new and well-received BEND Magazine, and will continue to publish Cascade Sotheby’s Design + Lifestyle Magazines, Central Oregon Visitors Association Annual Visitor Guide and the Travel Yamhill Valley Wine & Culinary Guidebook. Oregon Media will also continue to represent Oregon Quarterly Magazine. The new business will be led by Heather Huston Johnson and Ross Johnson.

This new model provides even more laser focus on all that the 1859 brand has come to offer Oregon—incredible lifestyle publications with award-winning content and robust advertising opportunities for our clients.”

1859 Media began as a statewide quarterly in 2009 and quickly grabbed the attention of Oregonians and those who wanted new and authentic content about Oregon. Its flagship magazine and visitors guides won national and regional awards for content and design. 1859 soon expanded to include a variety of high-quality proprietary, client custom publications and built a large audience across platforms. By 2015, two distinct lines of business emerged, essentially creating two companies under one roof—one that targets client custom and local publications, another that focuses on the 1859 lifestyle model and its potential for scaling.
