USA Today names
Bend ‘the new Boulder’
Bend is once again in the national
spotlight thanks to a recent article
from USA Today. Touted as “the new
Boulder, CO,” the travel article talks about
the easy access to the area’s outdoor
recreation including skiing, biking,
rafting and kayaking, hiking, golfing,
and fly fishing.
“The Bend side (of the Cascade Mountains) has all the
fun associated with the Pacific
Northwest, but without the rain,” the
article states.
This rave review also let readers know many vacationers
eventually become full time residents
due to the “outdoor living, natural
beauty, and mild weather.”
As a transplant from Oahu, Realtor
Virginia Ross of Coldwell Banker told
USA Today, “There is great recreation
just out your front door all year long.
I was so happy to go from palm trees to
juniper trees. Seasons were a change for
which I am thankful each day.”
Bend is also sold as a place with many amenities within
walking distance and very little sprawl.

County puts
Restaurant Inspections Online
Restaurant inspection scores are now
available online. The Deschutes County
Community Development Department (CDD)
put the scores online after repeated
requests from the general public.
The scores reflect restaurant conditions observed by
the health inspectors on the day of a
routine health inspection. The Web site
will now allow staff to provide
information online rather than making
document copies. This will not only save
time, but also allow staff to focus on
other customer service priorities.
Deschutes County restaurant inspection scores are
public information. According to a
county press release, the posted
inspection scores are not meant to
disparage or benefit any restaurant
within the county. “The scores are a
reflection of the conditions observed by
the health inspector on the day she or
he made that inspection,” the release
stated.
You may view current County restaurant inspections at
www.deschutes.org/CDDrestaurantscores.
For more information, please call the
Deschutes County Community Development
Department at 388-6575.

City of Bend
mentioned on Earth Times Web site
According to a press release on
www.Earthtimes.org, the City of Bend
is taking “the state lead in digital,
online plan submission and review” due
to its initiation of Avolve ProjectDox
ePlan software. This software allows for
the elimination of paper while providing
a complete online digital submission and
review process.
“The City of Bend becomes the first community in the
State of Oregon to implement a complete
online solution for construction and
land-use plan approval,” the release
states. The system became operational in
May 2008.
There will be an ongoing process for further
integration of permit applications and
tracking software. At this time the
ePlan system is only available to select
customers.
Bend was also recognized for recently becoming a “Green
Power Community” and for its dedication
to the conservation of the environment
while having a dramatic increase in
population.
“We welcome all the social and economic development
that is coming to our city, and to
support it responsibly, we must provide
the most advanced services possible to
businesses and citizens who want to live
and work here,” said Robert Mathias,
Building Division Manger. “We’re excited
and proud to be setting the pace in this
arena for the region and the state.”

Tech Watch:
Microsoft unveils new multi-touch system
Just like a mouse and keyboard, touch
screens will soon become another common
interface thanks to Microsoft. The
company announced Tuesday its newest
version of Windows will support
multi-touch touch screens.
With infrared sensors mounted on the front of a screen
(to sense touch gestures), users will be
able to open applications with a simple
touch of an icon. The technology also
allows users to manipulate photos with a
few gestures to enlarge, shrink, rotate,
or move images across the screen.
Microsoft is no stranger to touch technologies. Last
year it unveiled its tabletop Surface
multi-touch computer, and in early May, Touchwall, a multi-touch office
whiteboard, was demonstrated by
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates. The
company continues to develop a number of
touch technologies at MicrosoftResearch.
The Windows 7 operating system is expected to be
released in late 2009 or early 2010.

Correction
In last week’s Weekly E-news story
Cessna and Bend mentioned on Flight Web
Site, it was stated Cessna had made
$5 million in revenue in 2007. We
apologize for the typo. This should read
as $5 billion.
